We Saved £200 on our Car Insurance - Here's How!
That’s right a saving of £200 on our car insurance!  What could you do with £200 right now?  You certainly wouldn’t hand it to your insurance company as a gift would you?  Except that is exactly what we would have been doing if we hadn’t taken the plunge into shopping around.  In this post I give you my guide to the 10 simple steps which will help you get cheaper car insurance AND a FREE downloadable checklist which you can receive by subscribing below.

It’s funny really, we shop around for most things but when it comes to car insurance it just felt too difficult.  However, it actually took less than 30 minutes to enter our details onto a comparison site, choose a policy, buy the policy and then telephone the existing to company to stop the auto-renewal.  Thirty minutes to save £200.  Just think how long it would take you to earn that.

The only difficulty was trying to persuade my husband to actually shop around in the first place.  It helps that I sit in front of a pc all day for my day job and then sit in front of a pc in the evenings whilst blogging.  The result is that I have access to LOTS more information than my husband does.  I read blogs, I see adverts flashing up on websites I visit, I search for things at the drop of a hat, so when our car insurance renewal quote came through I knew it was something we should be looking into rather than just auto-renewing, as the insurance company wanted us to do.

We were insured with Direct Line and had been since 2001 (Yes - 2001! – we looked this up) and had been very happy with them but the renewal quote of £460 was quite staggering.  It had actually gone up £50 since last year.

I mentioned that we should look into getting a cheaper quote – to which my husband first agreed and then decided against – his reasons?  He couldn’t be bothered with the hassle and thought that any discount we could secure would not be worth it in the end.  Of course, I think he was remembering the old days when you had to actually speak to people on the phone and obtain written proof of your no-claims bonus which was then sent by snail mail.  I say old days, but really it wasn’t all that long ago, was it?

I wonder how many people feel the same way?

Eventually though, curiosity got the better of him and we decided to check on the comparison sites to see what sort of price we could hope to get.  We used Money Supermarket and were very impressed with how easy to use this site was.

Well, he couldn’t have been more surprised!  We managed to find a quote with Liverpool Victoria, with all the same benefits (ie excess, no claims protection etc) as our current car insurance policy, but this policy was only £260.

In fact, we were both so surprised at the quotes (and there were even cheaper ones although they didn’t have exactly what we wanted) that we went straight through to purchasing without a thought to going via a cashback site like Quidco or TopCashBack, which would have saved us even more money.  Oh well, you can’t win them all!
