Make your own Doner Kebab

Would you like to save money on Takeaway food without compromising on your takeaway treats?   Well, here's the solution!  You can make your own taste-a-like takeaway food.  Make your own Doner Kebab with this easy recipe.

Make your Own Taste-a-Like Takeaway Food

A few years ago, there was a lot of hype around a book called The Takeaway Secret: How to cook your favourite fast-food at home which was written by Kenny McGovern.  Kenny spent five years testing and tweaking his recipes until he created exact ‘taste-a-likes’ of all his favourite takeaway foods.  It features recipes for foods based on McDonalds, Subway, Chinese and Indian Takeaways, pizza places and chip shops plus the infamous homemade Doner Kebab recipe.

Kenny has gone on to produce more books, all on the theme of the nation's favourite takeaways:

The books are available in both paperback and Kindle.

I have used the paperback version of the original The Takeaway Secret book A LOT and some of my favourite recipes in this book are:

  • American Breakfast Sausage – Same as the Sausage McMuffin from McDonalds
  • Egg Muffin – same as the Egg McMuffin from McDonalds
  • Hamburger – same as McDonalds
  • Basic Curry Sauce – use to make multiple types of curry
  • Chicken Tikka Masala
  • Chicken Korma
  • Beef Chow Mein
  • Chicken Balls with Sweet and Sour Sauce
  • Southern Fried Chicken – like KFC
  • Meatball Sub – Subway style

There are also recipes included for the accompaniments too – for example, pitta bread, pitta salad and the sauces that go with the Doner Kebabs.

My absolute favourite recipe, and those of others I have cooked this for, is the Lamb Doner Kebab.  No matter who I make this for, they always ask for the recipe and you can make it for a fraction of the cost of a kebab from the takeaway.

Today, I am sharing this easy recipe with you so you can make your own Doner Kebab, as found in the book, along with my step by step instructions.

Make your own Doner Kebab

Serves 3-4

1 tsp Plain Flour

1 tsp dried Oregano

½ tsp of dried Italian Herbs

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp onion powder

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

500g lamb mince

Preheat your oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.

I have also cooked this successfully in a slow cooker having placed the prepared mince in a silicone loaf tin which I then placed in the slow cooker.

In a large bowl, combine everything but the mince.

Add in the mince and mix thoroughly, using your hands, for 2-3 minutes.  You need to knead the meat until it is well mixed and smooth.

Place the meat in a loaf shape on a non-stick baking tray.

Bake in the middle for 1 hour and 20 minutes, turning half way through the cooking time.

Once cooked, remove from oven and cover in foil.  Allow to rest for 10 minutes.

Slice the Doner meat as thinly as you can.  I have found using an electric carving knife to be the easiest way of getting thin slices, although I am sure if you used an electric food slicer you would get slices as thin as the takeaway.

Serve with pitta bread, salad and sauces.

Red Kebab Sauce

The book includes two kebab sauces – a red one and a white one – I have included the red one here:

6 tablespoons tomato ketchup

4 tablespoons water

1 tsp mint sauce

Chilli Powder to taste

Pinch of salt

Just combine all the ingredients and you are ready to go.

That’s all there is to it.  It really does taste just like the ‘real’ thing.  We haven’t bought a takeaway kebab since first trying this recipe and my Brother, who lives in Australia, loves this recipe.  He was always a fan of a Doner Kebab, but since being in Australia had been unable to source a kebab that was anything like the ones here in the UK.  Now he doesn’t need to, he just makes his own.

So, if you are ready to save some money, without compromising on your takeaway treats, grab a copy of these books and get cooking your own takeaway foods at home.
