Real Life Debt Stories - Simplistic Steph

Welcome to my series of 'Real Life Debt Stories'. The series is dependent on you sharing your stories, so if you are interested I'd love it if you'd complete this questionnaire. There are just 10 questions.

Real Life Debt Stories - Simplistic Steph

Thank you so much to Steph for sharing her story with us.

What was your Lightbulb moment?

Logging onto Wells Fargo, and seeing a 12% interest rate for one of my student loans! I had put all my graduation money towards the loan, only to see the needle NOT MOVE on the principal! I realized then just how much student loans were going to cost me.

How much did you owe at the time of your Lightbulb moment?

  $38,000

How did you feel when you had your Lightbulb moment?

Depressed, upset, and bitter! My husband (he was boyfriend at the time) had his college funded by his parents. Most of my friends received grants, or had parent help. I felt alone and like a failure for having so many student loans. That's when I started reading blogs and realized, hey! You don't have to keep these student loans for 15 years!

What/who were the circumstances which caused your debt?

College! I was dumb, and took out a loan for EVERYTHING! Drinks at the bar? Covered with left over loan money. Brand new text books? Loan money. Four runs to Starbucks in a day? Loan money.

What were the first steps you took in taking control of your debt?

Log on to the multiple websites I had my student loans on, and add everything up. It was an eye popping number. I lived with my sister for 3 months while attacking it, worked overtime, and got a side job.

Where are you now in your journey to being debt free? Do you have a target ‘debt free’ date?

I paid off my student loans in under 3 years!!!!! I have a car loan, but it is at 0% interest. Also a mortgage, but I'm not bitter towards that!

Are there any debt repayment ‘methods’ that you would recommend? What has worked for you?

Snowball method all the way! I don't think snowball makes sense for everyone, but it helped keep my psyche up.

What advice would you give to someone who has just had their ‘lightbulb’ moment?

Just start! Use that anger, sadness, or any other negative emotion to fuel your debt payment process! All it takes is a few extra payments to feel like a personal finance genius, and then it snowballs from there! You got this!

How do you stay motivated?

I wanted to be a home owner, and the student loan debt hindered that. Stay motivated by actually having a goal once the debt is paid off! Ie: travel, quit your job for a lower paid one, buy a cat, or any other goal. It helps to have a solid "WHY"

Please feel free to add in any more of your story here?

My debt pay off story was slow, but I believe slow and steady wins the race! You don't have to make a giant life altering change to achieve debt freedom, or reach your goals. It just takes simple tweaks! I managed to pay these loans off making less than $30k/year during the loan repayment.

Thank you, Steph.  Your story is really inspiring and to pay off your loan so quickly is amazing.

Would you like to Share Your Story?

My aim is to feature ‘Real Life Debt Stories’ from people who have experienced debt. This could be debt of any size, type or reason. Debt that has been paid off, debt you want to start paying off or debt that you are currently in the middle of paying off. I want to share failures as well as successes including the reasons why you found yourself in debt in the first place – as everyone’s story is different.

It is important to show people that they are not alone. I also want to highlight that different methods of getting debt under control work for different people and that there is not a ‘One Size Fits All’ solution.

This is where you come in. I am looking for anyone who is willing to share their story with my readers. I have developed a questionnaire for you to complete and this can be completely confidential and names will not be shared OR if are happy for your name to be used, I can use it. If you also have a blog, I am happy to link to your blog too, alongside your story.

I will then email you to let you know when your story will go live.

Why not pin this for later?
