If you ask my youngest, his answer is either ‘nothing much’ or ‘playing football’. I am sure that is what he would prefer to be doing. As a parent, I am keen to know exactly what he is learning so that I can help him when he needs it.
Either of our sons can come home from school, at any time, and announce that they have a test looming. We then ask two questions: Which subject and which topics within the subject? Very often the answer is ‘everything we have done in the last couple of months’. Sometimes they are not even given their school books to revise from.
So that we could actually help them, we had to develop a fool-proof way of knowing exactly what they had studied at school each week and we came up with – a lesson log!
This is a very basic table with 5 slots per day for them to write in the subject studied and the topic within that subject. They complete this each afternoon on returning home from school. I am sure there is a way this could be captured electronically, but simply writing it on a piece of paper works for us.
Now we know exactly what they are studying on a daily basis, as well as being able to look back for a whole term or even a whole school year to see what they have covered. We hole punch it at the end of each week and pop it in a lever arch file.
