Welcome to the part of the week where I link up to the 'Five Fabulously Frugal Things Linky' and share any frugal things that take place in the Money Saving Journeys household.
As always, the five frugal things are a mixed bag:
Cycled to work and back all week
Yes, I cycled for 5 days again and saved the petrol money. The weather has been freezing cold on the way going, so you will see me wearing thermal gloves, a fleece, windproof and waterproof coat and my beloved ear muffs. Then on the way back it has been rather warm, so everything gets packed into my bag and I am in my t-shirt. I haven't yet got my shorts out but hopefully it won't be long.
2. Cooked once and ate twice
Every four weeks I like to cook a big batch of spaghetti Bolognese in my slow cooker. I then portion this up into 4 family sized portions and place it in the freezer so we can pull one out each week. This week it was time to cook another batch for the coming weeks but we also fancied having Chilli and Wraps for tea on Saturday night. Rather than have to cook twice I added all the ingredients, minus the herbs and spices, to the slow cooker. I let this cook for 7 hours on low, then removed one family sized portion and placed in a pan. This was to become the Chilli. To this I added all the herbs and spices that the Chilli recipe required and let it simmer on the hob for another 15 minutes. Meanwhile, I added all the Bolognese herbs and spices to the slow cooker and let this cook for a while longer before portioning up. This saved me money on gas, electric and ingredients.
3. Took our own drinks
Saturday also saw a trip to watch the local football team in action. Rather than buy food and drinks at the extortionate prices that they charge at the stadium, we took our own. Some snacks and drinks from the supermarket and a flask of coffee for us saved us at least £20.
4. £1 Lipstick
I needed a new lipstick and normally buy this from Boots. On my way, I passed Poundland and I can never resist a visit to Poundland since one opened up near to where I live. I was surprised to find that Poundland had a range of make-up. I'd never noticed this before and thought I would give the lipstick a try. It is actually rather nice and I think I may go back and get another. Even if I do end up with two, I will still have saved less than the price of one from my normal brand.
5. Free lunch
We had a number of interview panels taking place at work this week and one of my jobs is to organise the whole thing from the shortlisting, scheduling, paperwork, room bookings, panel members and catering etc. There were three candidates who were due to attend on Tuesday and two of them withdrew at the last minute. This meant that the whole interview process had to be cancelled with less than 24 hours to go. So all the staff involved had to be notified, the rooms had to be cancelled etc. However, on the day of the interviews the catering appeared! We, my colleagues and I, had to take one for the team and tuck in to a free lunch as we didn't want it to go to waste.
How frugal was your week?
Why not pin this for later?
