Leicester's Riverside Festival – A Frugal Family Day Out
The first weekend in June sees the annual arrival of Leicester’s Riverside Festival. We have attended this festival for many years and each year it gets better and better. If the weather is nice, you can’t beat it for a frugal family day out.
When is Leicester’s Riverside Festival?
The Riverside Festival takes place on the first weekend each June and is open on both Saturday and Sunday.
Where is the Leicester Riverside Festival?
The festival takes place on Bede Park and the surrounding area. It is just a 10 minute walk from the city centre. It is right on the edge of the De Montfort University campus, so if you follow signs to this you can’t miss it.
Apart from the area on Bede Park which is grass, the rest of the festival is accessible for wheelchairs as there are proper footpaths and ramps.
What is the Leicester Riverside Festival?
There is something for everyone. There are boats – both to view, take a trip on your captain yourself. A plethora of stalls selling arts, crafts, food and drink. There’s a wide range of activities and shows too – many of which are free.
There is live music, on two ‘stages’ and bars selling drinks such as cider, beer and Pimm’s as well as soft drinks.
Is it suitable for kids?
Definitely! It is a real family event. There are loads of activities for kids and, as mentioned, many are completely free. There are also fair rides and bouncy castles, although these do have charges. There is a book bus, free giveaways, information stalls, giant Jenga and much more.
How to make this a frugal day out
As with most events, there are plenty of opportunities for you to splash the cash. However, this is one event that you don’t need to – as long as you can say ‘no’ to everything your children may want!
There is no entry fee. There are plenty of free activities and shows for adults and kids alike. If the weather is good there are lots of places to sit and eat your own picnic.
